whoa this cold brew batch is really nice and sweet

What I've been reading, sorta mini-review of Going Postal by Terry Pratchett

Alright I finished Going Postal earlier today. It was great!

I remember thinking when it came out that Terry Pratchett was losing his touch a bit, but actually I think his writing by 2004 was just getting beyond me in terms of complexity and subject matter (I was 18 then). By that point he'd more or less stopped writing Monty-Pythonish/Douglas Adamsy fantasy romps and was really tackling societal ills, and just happened to still be using the Discworld setting to do so.

The book's basically about monopolies and fraud and big telecomms companies, and it has sections that are, if not directly anticapitalist, then at least stridently anti-neoliberal. In particular there are some very cutting references to privatization, and the real on-the-ground damage caused by 'bloodless' financial crime and corruption. I was an angry punk in 2004, sure enough, but I couldn't really understand the critiques and references well enough in Pratchett's writing to enjoy them beyond a certain level. For 36 year old me though, who's a bit more worldly (I think?) it's perfect.

It's also really funny and at times surprisingly and poetically beautiful. I wanted more time with all of the characters.

Anyway, next up: The Fall of the House of Usher and some other bits and pieces of Poe that I somehow never got around to reading.
