It also drags out what can be a very uncomfortable and risky interaction for trans people longer than it has to be. For closeted trans people, intentionally giving pronouns they don't like can be painful. For stealth trans people it's a moment where they may wonder if they're going to be clocked. For anyone who's not sure if they pass, it can be an unintentional coming-out.
Exchanging pronouns explicitly can be wonderful, but it can also be stressful and we want to minimize that stress.
