The way I'm reading Apple's sparse marketing, and other articles it uses all Apple devices; also looking at https://www.cnbc.com/2021/04/27/apple-airtags-versus-tile-tracker-how-they-compare.html "Tile has sold more than 35 million devices" vs "Apple’s AirTag is similar, except it taps into not only other AirTags but also Apple’s existing network of iPhones and Macs, which is nearing a billion devices."
@jonw@hackers.town @c0debabe right, I didn't know they all used their apps as networks, Apple's network is orders of magnitude larger though. But yeah, that makes them all quite bad.
Just using your own device would be useful enough I think, because it'd work for remembering the 'last place you saw it' so as long as your item doesn't get moved you can find it back
@jonw@hackers.town well there's a big difference with the conventional bluetooth trackers that only worked in range of your own device, whereas Apple's now uses their 'Find My network' to have every Apple device on the planet act as your search coverage, greatly increasing how much and how far you can track your tracker (anywhere there's other Apple devices)

@erikk@chaos.social afaik authenticated fetch is supposed to fix this by every instance basically asking back to mine if they can see it, but of course it only takes a bit of malicious server software to circumvent it..

Pretty wild how common the "your library needs to reinvent wheels at least 500 lines worth or else it's BAD" mentality still is, you'd think it's obvious that small dependencies are the perfect 'do one thing, do it well' philosophy...
@polymerwitch @kawaiipunk something to keep in mind with matrix is that your server will also do a lot of outgoing federation requests to other servers, so to hide your ip from them as well you do need some kinda local vpn
