ohhh this is cool, I got the slightly more expensive M42 to Canon EF adaptor from aliexpress with an identification chip, and now it does focus beeping (even though it's still a vintage lens with manual focus), and has more accurate exposure in liveview

re: fosstodon admin bigotry, more background from 2019

@packbat it's been archived here archive.is/WkbCV

Hey Science, I need a tube in my kitchen so I can shout "butter, you dickhead" into it and I'll hear that two days ago when I'm standing in the middle of the supermarket thinking "what was I out of again?"

Furthermore, I encourage any FOSS projects who have accounts on fosstodon.org to either move to an instance of their own where feasible or move to a better FOSS oriented instance.

The FOSS community at large deserves better than what fossotodon.org can deliver.

Like do you really want your FOSS project's account on a instance where the admin behaves like *that*? or where it is policy that all posting must be in English.

Last time I checked, FOSS is supposed to be for everyone, not just people who speak English.

Clarification edit - FOSS stands for Free and Open Source Software.

picking up a project I last touched 10 months ago and man I left it quite the wreck

re: AI Snark. Being broke snark.

@weirdwriter sadly blocking scrapers is a never-ending battle. I try my best keeping an up-to-date list of ip's and user-agents to block for pixie.town, but there's new ones all the time, and particularly motivated attackers will always be able to evade shit.

Or in the case of Mastodon, just be able to get access to the same toots etc through webviews of other instances. I just suspended ryanak.xyz because they explicitly reverted the OpenAI block on their instance... github.com/Ryanaka/mastodon/co

re: AI Snark. Being broke snark.

@weirdwriter unfortunately no way to make them pay, but OpenAI was forced to publish the ip's they use for scraping, so you might be able to block those at least

and, because it always goes back to Jacob Geller: Worlds Designed for Violence

it reminds me of the preface of "All That Is Solid Melts Into Air", about (post)modernism; analyzing the architecture of Brazil's new capital, Brasìlia, designed as "embodying the hopes of the Brazilian people", but turning out to be a city perfect for holding control, depriving people of common spaces to freely interact, and providing ample infrastructure to quell revolution

possibly spoilers for Silo/Snowpiercer

actually they're both structures built for control, incredibly easy to have checkpoints either in a train or a single staircase, and cut off entire sections. literally just vertical/horizontal variants

Silo really feels like a mix of 1984 and Snowpiercer
