practical meta stuff

Okay so like, widely defederating Meta/Facebook is important, but we also need to start thinking about what to do once they start influencing the development direction of upstream Mastodon (because this is extremely likely, given Gargron's NDA meeting).

Can we rely on any existing forks to withstand this sort of pressure? Are they in need of more contributions, funding, support, etc.? Is a new fork needed? What steps need to be taken to ensure that Facebook cannot still exert influence over our spaces through the software?

@joepie91 please checkout glitch-soc
there's only one maintainer

re: practical meta stuff

@kouett @joepie91 the issue with glitch-soc is that sole maintainer is also a full-time Mastodon employee, and glitch-soc generally just follows the direction of upstream with some modifications

re: practical meta stuff

@f0x @joepie91 I'm not Claire but I think she has demonstrated good judgement and removed/didn't implement unwanted features in the past.

Despite working on mastodon main, she has much more of the user's interests in mind and is still critical of Rochko's decisions (see github issues and public comments)

glitch is the closest there is to mastodon. ofc there are also other forks, like hometown.

given the growth of the fediverse and actual upcoming threats, I'd say the best moment to freeze AP and make it a clear(er) standard would be now. what we need the most is a working group with AP authors/contributors/fedi maintainers, not a successor to mastodon mainline. this may come afterwads, if needed.

re: practical meta stuff

@kouett @f0x @joepie91 Claire is one the last people (in eugen circles) trying hard to prevent him to go wild with his modifications, like I'd say half her mental health is dedicated to limit the impact of website boy "revolutionary ideas" (including telling him he's doing stupid shit)

re: practical meta stuff

@darckcrystale @kouett @joepie91 for sure, and I appreciate that, but I still expect glitch-soc will largely follow upstream, because they don't have the resources/intent to actual independence. This is already apparent by the wide public api access introduced in Mastodon 4.x (ignoring secure_mode) also being included in glitch-soc
