for those of you who've used good over-ear headphones with and without active noise cancelling, how much would you say it adds?

background: i've been using my Sennheiser HD4.40BT for years now (no anc), and could get a good deal on a Bose QC 35 (with anc)

@f0x if you travel a lot on planes, or buses etc, and you really really like quiet/not blowing out your eardrums because you need to keep on upping the volume, they add a ton. the good ones (which are really the only ones worth getting, such as sony wxm series) are really really good as convenient every day headphones

@f0x depends on what you're trying to achieve. in terms of music-listening experience, zero. in terms of helping focus in an office, a *TON*. I also recommend the mynoise.net/ options with "speech blocker" settings

@f0x also really excellent for blocking city noise. i live/work in a condo with deeply inadequate air exchange, so the window's gotta be open, and it's *loud* out there.

@f0x I will onlu get headphones with noise cancelling any more, but would probably keep using headphones without until they break or otherwise have to be replaced. the difference between active noise can enabled or disabled is less than between that and taking off headphones entirely.

@f0x A lot, at least for me with my noise sensitivity. ANC allows me to play music at low volume instead of having to drown out environmental noise, which is overall much nicer; and I can also turn on *just* the ANC with no sound if I just want silence!
