I usually don't have the time to investigate into such things too deeply by myself, so I depend very much on opinions from others that seem to know more about it.
That research that I linked I found through @muppeth (if I remember correct).
He was long time very supportive for #matrix, also hosting it at disroot.org, but decided to stop. In his reasoning I found those links to that research.
But yes, I guess matrix also improofed in the meantime.
(moxie ranting against decentralisation is part of the reasons I try to avoid #signal)
