Spooky is a visually stunning game demo for the #C64 that shows off the graphical power of the platform when given to an artist who really understands its strengths and limitations. This was my main inspiration to investigate the sprite overlay technique: not just to add resolution, but also to give each sprite two individual colours, which makes a huge difference.
