So: Hi new masto users. There's a lot of trouble with anti-blackness and other forms of racism here.

One of the things I've liked the most with fedi is the opportunity to listen to people suffering from racism.
It's given me so much practice in sitting with my discomfort. I'm eternally grateful for the people who have been patient with me in this.

New users, grab this opportunity, if it's new to you. We're raised in a racist society, we've got racism in our heads. Resist that racism.

And if you're white, just shut up and listen, as much as you can.

Listen to the marginalized and racialized people in your community, as they experience things very different to anything you can understand if you're white.

You do not have to inject your experiences, you can just listen. Listening takes practice. Practice listening.

There have been many waves of exodus from Twitter. When new people arrive they often bring with them their larger-than-life Twitter persona with them. I understand what that's all about, because it's how Twitter trains people to behave if they want to be seen and engage with their audience and so that the timeline algorithm works in their favour.

But here in the fediverse you don't need to put on a big performance. You can be more authentic, and just hang out with friends. Edginess which would be rewarded by the algorithm on Twitter tends to be discouraged here, and might even get you blocked.

Some of my friends are sex workers and after a conversation I had last night with one I once again feel the urge to scream "Fuck SWERFs" into a void, so this is it, this is the toot. Fuck every last SWERF
