> The PSP's web browser is - charitably - pathetic. It is slow, frequently runs out of memory, and can only open 3 tabs at a time... But the GOV.UK pages are written in simple HTML. They are designed to be lightweight and will work even on rubbish browsers. They have to. This is for everyone...
> Are you developing public services? Or a system that people might access when they're in desperate need of help? Plain HTML works. A small bit of simple CSS will make look decent. JavaScript is probably unnecessary - but can be used to progressively enhance stuff. Add alt text to images so people paying per MB can understand what the images are for (and, you know, accessibility).
> Go sit in an uncomfortable chair, in an uncomfortable location, and stare at an uncomfortably small screen with an uncomfortably outdated web browser. How easy is it to use the websites you've created?

The Unreasonable Effectiveness Of Simple HTML

this whole post is great but the last line KNOCKED ME OUT

My joints are doing a thing and GDQ's castlevania runs are done, I might lay back down

subtoot, cw meta

Sorry, you seem cool but I'm really, really tired of un-cwed politics and death on full blast, just reminding me of how fucked things are rather than at least talking about action.

I moved here from Twitter years ago because I need the energy to pick my battles.

Meta, politics, social media: general requests

Could people please:

A) CW their posts about politics, even vague ones about the intersection of politics and social media? It would help me (and almost certainly others) engage with those posts in a way that maintains my mental health.

B) Reconsider boosting un-CWd posts about the same. Same reasons apply.

Both would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

My uncle worked at a computer company, and I've always wanted to see how they are made. So I asked him to show me an assembly line and he replied with a bunch of weird letters and stuff.

A recent query by a well-loved personality asking how much effort it was to maintain blocklists on a single-user instance was met with several replies that boiled down to “Oh, I don’t block anybody and I’ve never had a problem.” 😬

Some of you recognized your privilege in not being a demographic targeted by hate instances; good. But none of you realized the danger you posed to that user, because you incorrectly assumed that federation blocks are transitive, and they’re not.

If she posts something, and you boost it, then you are republishing it according to your own (nonexistent) blocklists, and it can end up on a hate instance irrespective of whether the user has blocked that hate instance.

So if you admin an instance, even if you are the only one on it, you _must_ still participate in blocking hate instances, even if they don’t target you directly.

UKpol, voter ID

This year, you won't be able to vote without certain photo ID in the UK. Most of the accepted forms are non-free, and are skewed towards the kinds of ID older people have. Keep your right to vote by getting a Voter Authority Certificate if you don't have other valid ID. Learn about it here: electoralcommission.org.uk/i-a

Second Edit: Okay, y'all can stop boosting this, I've had enough artists give me their info for me to look through!
Thank you all for the help and for offering your skills!

Any artists currently open for a commission?
:boost_ok:

EDIT: I'm specifically looking for a furry artist capable of drawing a full-body, flat colored piece!

moths are skybunnies, it's the year of the rabbit... omg it's year of the moth

Concept:

Electronics with physical buttons where the buttons have one (1) function that they do every time you press them (no "double-press to X; long-press to Y" etc)

Drawing all of the folds in a dress can be so frustrating - so using a reference can be a HUGE help! Dance on over to my Ko-fi page and get this pack for free! 💃💃💃 -> ko-fi.com/s/b2e25b82a9

#Art #Artist #AdorkaStock

This whole fediverse trend of responding to ideas about improving with moderation with "well just make a personal block list, there you go"

really need to die.

Personal filters and block lists are not "moderation" they aren't an affirmation of shared community values, they can't replace moderation to effectively stem the flow of hate content.

They don't meet the need.

If you don't have this need that is fine. There are places you can go. But lots of people do. jeeeeez

i think i saw a report of how bumblebees like to play with balls + the newest #SillyCuratorPrompts lead to this cute fuzzy #Snailify bumblebee :blobcatcoffee:

I’ve seen this graphic now and then on that bird site and it intrigued me, being of Irish descent and all. A more well-researched article on the subject can be found here… earthandstarryheaven.com/2015/
