Once a researcher tasked with tracking down smuggled relics, Basil has since gone freelance but keeps one such relic of his own, an ancient spellbook filled with the memories of past wielders that allows him to cast magic when he was born without the ability to do so himself. Under the mistaken belief that wielding it barehanded would consign his soul to the tome, he wears gloves when handling it himself.

While he used to be self-important and scheming, Basil has fallen on hard times, and developed a smoking habit with matabako from constant sleepless nights of research into the ancient history of his world
