I was chuckling to myself at how last year I was Very Against the idea of UA-blocking Pleroma and wondering what's different here.

The main thing different here to vee is Wildebeest doesn't have a captive userbase yet. If it can't talk to anyone now, on day one (ish), it won't get to the point where people are on it and stuck as people start blocking it.

Say no to this now; it'll make things easier for everyone.
