I had no clue that Windows will whine and kick like an unhappy mule if you try putting it on an external drive.

Apparently you have to use a 3rd-party tool called Rufus that is Windows-only to create a 'Windows To Go' install on any non-MS approved external drive. The official windows install mediums themselves will all just refuse if they detect a drive attached over USB. Unfortunately this is a my passport drive so I can't just shuck it to get a SATA connection, so I had to setup a Windows VM just to use Rufus, to install Windows.

@reese this all smells like a scheme to make external drive manufacturers shell out money for an official "Windows To Go" license on their disks tbh. No way there is any functional difference between an unlicensed drive and a licensed one.
