There's two types of woodworking instructors: "here's the $10k of equipment you need to build a cabinet" and "eh, a butter knife will probably get the job done with enough patience"
Sometimes, when I watch videos of people making stuff, and they're like "so I just 3d printed some more parts" I'm like "okay, did you spend three weeks messing with your printer trying to fix it, and then edit that out of the video? Or do you have some kind of million-dollar printer that you're being sponsored by and that's the only way you could afford it?"
Either way, it's not very satisfying. The appeal of these videos is to fantasize that if I practice real hard, I could theoretically do these things too.
@MegaMichelle I definitely prefer the latter! There's often so much ingenuity in those videos, so many "oh!" moments, that you just don't get from the "expensive workshop" videos.
I don't think I know how to find the "making things with simple tools" videos except, like, Primitive Technology.
@MegaMichelle Oh, I don't either - I just occasionally run across them and it makes my day :)
Oh yeah, there's this guy! He's going through the development of technology from scratch.

It is very satisfying to watch videos of people doing woodworking with $10k worth of tools. But I wonder if it might also be satisfying to watch people who are very good at it do it with minimal tools.
