... Can we please disable the translate thing, ohmygod. It's so badly implemented right now, and I don't want to have to deal with translate links on posts people wrote in English because they accidentally forgot to change the post language.

Also, it's annoying as hell because it appears on languages I can speak, but I can't do anything about it because the system settings think we're all inherently monolingual.

Which is weird for a "founder" who is probably trilingual at minimum, good fucking grief.

@whatanerd I do not understand why language auto-detection apparently isn't implemented. There's a well-tested library for this from Google(!) that has been around for a decade by this point and works *completely* offline, with a shockingly high accuracy rate.

@joepie91 @whatanerd its not well implemented for those who want to improve their language skills - the destination language is hardcoded to your UI language but how well it works depends on the toot language setting (which I keep forgetting to use) so I often end up having to use Deepl Windows client anyway (which is also flaky); although I can read NL, DE and FR fairly well if I toot in those languages I use Deepl to double check that I'm not making too many errors..

@joepie91 Along with just letting me have some checkboxes in settings that are like "I speak these languages."

Which would be infinitely more useful than "Please, filter out everything except these."
