I mean the fact that I have to mention anything about performative allyship is like, kinda cruddy imo. if you're an ally just act like one, you don't need a special badge, there's like a million different things you can do to identify yourself as cool and decent and likely trustworthy
when people say "i'd like to apologize on behalf of my race"
hey also I don't know who needs to hear this, and I don't know how other POC feel about this, but please never apologize to me for the behavior of other white people. like, what? "Oh, as a white person, I'd like to apologize on behalf of my race."
like, if you've ever said that, take a second to listen to how that sounds. one, who the hell are you to speak for your whole people? and two, why are you defending them? yes, that's defending them. apologizing on behalf of them like they're your responsibility is such a strange thing to do. get mad AT THEM, and do it WITH ME, not for me.
please, it's so fucking patronizing. and! it feels pretty damn racist. both in the moment, if you're doing it in public or wherever, or if you're talking to me one on one. what the fuck kind of a thing to say is that?? why are you saying it?? when you say that, you're not telling me you're my ally, you're telling me you're theirs.
and last, it's just plainly uncomfortable to hear and I didn't ask for an apology from you. almost every time it's from someone who's not even remotely related to whatever racist thing happened. who are you? either do something helpful in that situation or don't bother me. there's so many other things you could say. like literally it's like you're making it about you. I don't care about your whiteness until it starts affecting me. begone, white fella
