If your device needs an app to work? Fuck you. If it needs an app to work AND you don't have an open source api? Double fuck you and fuck the people who buy your product too

re: Computers, need technical help

@katnjia @tinytoydragon @kana@todon.nl XP doesn't support GPT, but windows 7 does. It will only let you install to a GPT drive if you boot to the installer as UEFI though, not MBR. Vista supported GPT too, but I think it had some issues with it.

Computers, need technical help

@kana@todon.nl I've used this tool before: github.com/slacka/WoeUSB
I know it works for 7, I'm not sure it it works for XP. The XP installer didn't officially support being run from a flash drive, but I think there's a way to get it working.

i just got sent a long and heartfelt email from someone about how OCRbot helps them and how they couldn't use fedi without it

they have vision issues and can't really caption the images themselves, and rely on OCRbot to do it for them

this is the first time i've ever seen someone with a physical disability talk about OCRbot and um, it feels really special and also quite strange that so much responsibility has been placed on it and myself

@feld @wxcafe Neat, I didn't know ZFS did that. Does it write data to the vdevs sequentially, or do you just have to hope that the file you want was on the right vdev?

Intersex, surgery, news, pol

@Soft_Missy That's good news. A similar bill was proposed in California, but it looks like it failed a vote yesterday: cnn.com/2020/01/13/us/californ
All children should be protected from genital surgery without consent.

@feld @wxcafe Neat. Wouldn't you have bits of most files spread across both mirrors though?

Woo-hoo, fluffy, puffy snowflakes coming down!

@wxcafe That depends on whether you want better redundancy or better performance. raid10 will be faster, but if both drives in one of the mirrors fail, all of your data is gone. Z2 will still have your data if any two drives fail. I have an 8 drive Z2 array in my server, with a ZFS mirror on two SSDs for the boot drive.

Parents let intersex child decide for herself

@auravulpes @maeve It looks like California's bill to protect intersex children failed a vote yesterday: cnn.com/2020/01/13/us/californ All children should be protected from genital surgery before they can consent to it.

Seriously, though. There is no excuse in 2020 to be sending HTML email. You can almost assuredly get your point across just as well with a plain text email.

Fuck HTML email.

I love how my dog sees another dog and is all like

realised I can't start fulfilling single pin orders because i forgot to do the backing card for those. Oops :v Anyway, made one now and it should be here on Thursday

I'm trying to recover some data for a friend. It has been going for at least a couple weeks, but it seems to still be making progress. I had to set up a loop to retry ddrescue every 30 seconds when the drive disappears. Earlier today it was around 44%.

Cute dog

@venusinlibra666 smol and dedicated to not using the memory foam bed I bought her
