Does anyone have any sources on the treatment of intersex people in pre-industrial societies?

@theonefreeman Islam in particular has a weird and interesting history with intersex folks it seems

genital mutilation

@Pyretta Genital cutting is common in Islam, almost universal for males, and common for females in many places. I wonder how intersex children were treated.

genital mutilation

@theonefreeman it seems like the genital mutilation is a more recent conservative swing (more recent in about the time of the crusades that is) but most of the time they were treated equitably albeit sorted into either male or female, with some rare cases qualifying as both. From what I read there, anyway.

genital mutilation

@Pyretta Interesting. I know the Quran itself doesn't mention male or female genital mutilation.
