Disability pride, hearing info
Happy disability pride month! 💙
Just ordered more adapters for my cyber ear. Thankfully, the adapters are pretty inexpensive, so the accessories for my commercial sound processor come out to about $4/week.
If your hearing is currently not a subscription service, take a moment and enjoy your ability to hear sounds while in wet environments like rainstorms, at the beach, and while showering. In case you didn't know, most hearing devices aren't remotely waterproof and will be totally fried by exposure to liquids.
Also, your hearing probably is actually a subscription service. Go check that you've got some earplugs on hand. Not all hearing loss is exposure related, but sufficient exposure will cause hearing loss in anyone.
The more you know! 🌈✨
Minneapolis police brutality, new information on Winston Smith case, dark
Anyone who wasn't upset about this before, place kindly upset yourselves? Surrounding a man and his date in a nice neighborhood with unmarked vehicles in plainclothes and opening fire is not 'keeping the peace'. It's a execution without due process. This. is. not. okay.
For folks who don't live here, this happened in uptown, a predominantly white, kinda yuppie area. Winston Smith and his date were probably one of two black couples their server saw the whole night. They likely paid $75-150 for a nice date together, and had only been dating for a few weeks. Uptown is a lively, bustling area. It's a place where people want to be, at least a little bit. And this.. It just seems like they were killed in cold blood for being black and parking in the yuppiest parking ramp in town for a nice date night. This is egregious. Our police department would never do this to a white couple. Small, incremental reforms just can't unseat this kind of stark racism. There needs to be a fundamental change in how the department functions.

@132ikl that might be why. I'm not an expert, but a friend of mine is quite good, and he's found that major providers often filter out things other than the main three extensions.
Anyways, good luck and I hope this helps.
elevator pitch: it's a bash script that assembles video entries from a collection of rss feeds into a "local access UHF television station" stream at crappy resolution, with optional custom titling of the videos and station idents via json or some bullshit, updated every 24 hours with a new rotation of videos for the broadcast day
@132ikl is your tld recently registered or anything other than org, com, or net?
Hello Wednesday!
In a few short hours, the clowns will be doing their acrobatic thing in the #CircusInPlace video chat.
Come cheer them on and keep them company starting at 8pm UTC-5:
Negative book review, menstruation mention, sexist author, little rant, spoilers for Pattern Recognition
So, I read pattern recognition by Gibson.
Cayce Powell puts in a tampon, then never takes it out. She spends what appears to be the following week drifting in and out of consciousness. I know the author is glossing over things, but our girl got kidnapped and knocked out by the Russian mob. How tf did she not come down with toxic shock syndrome?
If you're going to bother to write women, please stop making your action heroines kill themselves via lack of education about their own sex organs. This was stressing me out the whole book and it turns out the author just forgot that leaving a tampon in a vagina will kill someone.

i say a limited capacity because the way it works on the typewriter is there's a separate key for the "word extension" glyph. it works but its not terribly interesting. the same is true of Unicode, where there's a code point (U+0640 ARABIC TATWEEL) which plays the same role.
compare that to the jaw dropping beauty of Ottoman maps that use the elasticity of the script to make labels of things cover and follow the thing they label. digital text rendering cant really do this...

github copilot has, by their own admission, been trained on mountains of gpl code, so i'm unclear on how it's not a form of laundering open source code into commercial works. the handwave of "it usually doesn't reproduce exact chunks" is not very satisfying
i got my hands on an old east german arabic typewriter and ive been taking it for a spin! the thing is pretty wild. missing some obscure but important letters, representing some letters up to four different times to accommodate for the cursive nature of the script. the typeface is spartan but fine. it has a certain charm to it. i dont have a project in mind, just noodling for now.
Food, fancy(?) coffee recipe
Today, I made a chocolate orange antoccino to match the chocolate orange Milano cookies I had. It turned out really well, though maybe it's too close to how the cookies taste to be the best pairing. 😅
1. Make espresso in aeropress
2. Add some baking cocoa powder to espresso, maybe 3/4 teaspoon?
3. Add five drops of orange essential oil, add a little sugar if you want
4. Whip espresso, chocolate, and oil together with frothing wand
5. Steam milk in columnator thingie and add that to cup
6. Drink!
@rysiek consider imagery that shows a dandelion growing through cracked cement. It's a nice visual metaphor for technology that was not robust being slowly replaced by something more flexible.
You might also want to consider a mushroom, or violets or marigolds, as folks have said. I also like lilacs. They're not trivial to draw, but they survive very cold winters and are always a welcome sign that summer is on its way. Sunflowers also self-re-seed, and might be good choices, too.
