I think the #1 thing that would bother me in going for console-mode only computing is the inability to handle Japanese and Arabic etc.

I have little hope that I can do multilingual text processing in the framebuffer. most *X terminal emulators* *still* don't handle RTL bidi, and it was a huge PITA to make what is now the standard IME (ibus) work on X.

I guess I could use the builtin IMEs from Emacs, if my EeePC can handle it…

it's not like pgksrc will have packaged some sort of fast multilingual console for the framebuffer—-

well but everyone and their brother these days claim to "support" "Unicode" but all that they do is to render glyphs from font tables, it's not like most so-called Unicode terminal emulators can do bidi—
