discussing with someone if it would be possible to provide shelter from the cold for bumblebees they already found one dead, and today too the weather is at this line where the bumbles come out, then become unable to fly due to the cold.
if you offer them your skin they come immediately, and leave once they're warm enough to move. they seem to love tucking inside folds of clothing, too. but they're clearly uncomfortable in indoor spaces, I think—they'll leave a room as soon as they recover, even if it's cold outside. past experiences showed me that using a heated pad or similar doesn't work either, they avoid staying on it. maybe it's too hot?
my balcony has a few corners not exposed from the wind, but the bumblebees don't seem to take shelter in these protected areas. they sit on exposed flowers then freeze in the wind blasts
one idea was to make a little semi-open shelter, like a box with one side open, protected from wind and rain, with maybe a couple pots of bee flowers, a little folded blanket, a sugar water dispenser. I doubt they would seek this out but if you find one struggling with cold you could leave there. another is to procure big flowers with wind shelter, male bumblebees sometimes sleep in those when it's cold out—crocus, poppies, larger campanulas—but it's hard to have those available throughout the year what do you do in a country where you go from 30° to 13° in a space of 2 days
