@MarkHoltom how old is that post? Things have taken a turn for the worse in Germany since then. Now, patriotic Germans celebrate their country by lighting immigrant families' homes on fire and deporting them into active war zones
Wikipedia turns out to have an article that says they weren't quite that rare: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contrabass_saxophone
But the historical manufacturer was French. Wikipedia does not mention their patriotism. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffet_Crampon
And for more on the Nuclear Whales, here's a live concert they did in the same town where I went to high school: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Kl0f4aqvfTM (CW: intense early aughts music nerdery)
One of the members taught in the music programme at my school, but not high school students. Anyway, Kristen Strom is cool.
@lyncia @schratze
The Nuclear Whales Saxophone Orchestra has a contrabass sax that was built around 100+ years ago by patriotic Frenchmen. There used to be nine of them in the world (according the orchestra), but either I've seen almost all of them or somebody else made more since.
Adolphe Sax was actually Belgian, so its possible the whales were just felling a fish story.
