"thinkpad modded bios with wifi whitelist removed" is NOT a sentence I expected to read

@theking theres another one that unlocks even further config features and a warning to not fuck around lest ye find out

@lyncia @theking is that the middleton bios or something?
what model is it?
@lyncia @theking ahh i stopped one sooner than that, i think those have UEFI so it's harder to flash them or something
@lyncia @theking (that said, you got one with a good keyboard and eDP, which is very nice)
@lyncia @theking embedded DisplayPort
it's a somewhat more standard video connection than the older thinkpads used, which means more LCD upgrades are possible than on older models.
@lyncia @theking I'm typing on your exact keyboard right now (the T510 I've got here uses the same part number); I agree. You got the last one that had a good keyboard.
I slightly prefer the slightly earlier ones ones with the smaller delete and escape keys but it hardly makes a difference most of the time. And the feel of the X220's is a bit superior to the X201's I think.
T510 is my "meh" thinkpad that i just use because the others don't have good batteries at the moment, but the keyboard in it is good.

@wyatt@soc.megatokyo.moe @lyncia@social.pixie.town my t400 keyboard is decent, I'm not the biggest fan of the modern chicklet ones

I had an Acer aspire one netbook from like 2009 and the keyboard was actually phenomenal lol

@theking @lyncia 90s thinkpads had the best feel of all.
the T400 uses a similar board to the one in my X201, I feel the same way. Just decent.
Although the manufacturer does matter; the NMB/Nimebea made boards feel better than the ones Chicony made. They have different FRU's but are interchangeable.

@wyatt @theking yeah its got uefi which makes me go :D cause uefi lets you do some goofy shit

@lyncia @theking it actually looks like if you're running windoze you can use someone else's flasher just fine. I think the UEFI ones can't be flashed from FreeDOS like my X201 can, though :(

@wyatt@soc.megatokyo.moe @lyncia@social.pixie.town iirc all the way up to t480 era are easily modded
Probably further now (but I haven't needed to check for my t14 g1 AMD)

@wyatt@soc.megatokyo.moe @lyncia@social.pixie.town actually, now that I think about it, my x270 must not have a WiFi list? Unless I happened to by chance get an ax210 that is on the list?

@theking @lyncia can they be easily modded if you do not have a copy of windows at all? how are you flashing them? (unless you are opening it up and using a chip clip and external programmer)

@wyatt@soc.megatokyo.moe @lyncia@social.pixie.town there are tools to flash the bios from Linux, since I've gotten firmware updates using linux

Edit re: edit: ohhh that kind, iirc it's possible to do via software still? For some things?

@theking @lyncia hmm maybe that's something that's only around for UEFI systems, i looked pretty hard for something like that for mine
@lyncia i've flashed those on a lot of computers, depending on the model i may have a nice convenient bootable USB image that can be used to flash it

@wyatt im learning a lot about thinkpad now that I own one.

i dont think ive been this ":0" at a laptop in a long long time

@lyncia i like mine too. especially x61 and x201 and their tablet versions
