a weird thing I've noticed, that I *assume* is related to me being autistic, is that even when I'm enjoying media I watch/read, if I listen to someone else's commentary while watching it I often realize I'm just barely understanding it and am missing huge swaths of the narrative without realizing it at all.

It's strange because I love to read and feel I can understand and enjoy complex fiction and classics, but a lot of things seem to go right over my head, especially foreshadowing.

I've been watching Voltron with my boyfriend, it's my third time watching the show and his first, and I have heard him point out foreshadowing in the first few episodes that I missed the first time around, then missed AGAIN the second time around, and probably never would have noticed at all if I hadn't read like 50 different fanfics highlighting it 🤔

When I really enjoy a show or book, I read it more than once and often in the second read-through, realize that there were major parts of the plot that I only picked up on halfway through.

I don't know why they escape me. It seems like while I get a rich experience out of books/shows and have good reading comprehension, there are underlying assumptions about what neurotypicals pay attention to that I completely violate.

I'm curious if any other autistics experience narrative this way. Like getting absolutely nothing in terms of plot out of the first few episodes of a show, not being able to remember and connect foreshadowing to later events, just kinda feeling it as a big sensory blur with a few tenuous threads of plot that I'm able to put together, but enjoying it anyway idk

@snep
it really depends on who wrote it. like a lot of things have foreshadowing thats really intricate and i can get behind but some have seemingly simple cues i can't follow.
