Well, the "I am leaving and this is why" blogposts are starting to appear.

I'm worried that it's reached the trust thermocline, and I'm not sure there's any coming back from this.

matrix

@joepie91 oh what's going on now? And what is their proposed alternative?

I host my own small matrix server for friends and family, but I haven't seen alternatives really. I'm not going back to IRC, but deltachat requires hosting email and last time I attempted that, I had to deal with a lot of hackers and it sucked, because email is so... email. I guess the only other option outside of matrix, irc, and deltachat is xmpp?

Like, I wish when people said they didn't like a thing, they at least said what they would do instead. It's fine to not like a mod team, or a product or whatever, but if it's something people use to survive, like how they chat with their loved ones in a self hosted secure manner, we can't just say "don't use this anymore". I have family and friends that I need secure ways to talk to due to the locations they live having very shit governments.

Btw, I also think matrix is shit, but I've never seen anything better that's self hosted, secure, allows images, allows emojis, allows calls, and has clients for all desktops and mobile apps. It's a tall order, but if we want to replace something like slack or discord, it's required.

(btw none of this is aimed at you. I'm just frustrated with the self-hosted chat ecosystem, not you at all!)

@joepie91 I occasionally regret not taking a job with them a few years back, to work on the mobile apps. Could I have helped sort out those issues? Possibly. Idk.

I deeply want Matrix or a similar usable-by-grannies, distributed, foss, self hostable, secure, etc etc platform to make it. Society needs it now more than ever.

@sam It is my opinion that the issues with Matrix are a failure of leadership, not of the competence of those working on the technical implementations. I suspect those doing so intended to fix the issues too.

@sam (That's not to say that there aren't a couple folks who I find to have questionable habits in terms of code quality, but that wouldn't have been such a problem if there were the leadership and organizational capability to handle that appropriately...)
