We need forge federation if we ever want self hosting to be viable to projects with more than a hand full of contributors or a massive org behind them. But forgefed seems like a distant prospect at best, and I don't see alternatives popping up. Disappointing.

@sasha Wouldn't "ability to use same identity/account across forges" be sufficient for this? Without any further federation

@joepie91 Most likely, yes. Though either way it'd need a moderation system, domain blocking, etc. Keep the nastiest out.

@joepie91 It would depend on how it's implemented. Having a single interface for all of your work would be optimal but not necessarily required. I can still see how this would be difficult to implement either way.

@sasha The reason I bring it up is because "cross-site authentication" (even if you take into account moderation) is a vastly easier technical problem to solve than full federation of everything, and I often feel like the widespread focus on full federation as The Solution To Everything is causing a lot of delays in getting anything working where there really didn't need to be any

@joepie91 I agree with the sentiment at the very least. forgefed seems overcomplicated to me.

@joepie91 Like why does my forge need to federate comments with Mastodon?!
