"AI"

It's kind of suspicious how every single study claiming that "AI saves time" is based on self-reported data, isn't it? Especially considering that the whole point of LLMs is to be deceptively effective?

@joepie91 I love layer 8 attacks

@joepie91 I saw an article about how self checkout machines are significantly slower than normal tills but users perceive them to be faster because they are doing busywork. And I wonder if AI is similar.

self checkouts, re: AI"

@teo Tangentially, I imagine that depends on the type of self-checkout 😅

"AI"

@teo That could very well be part of it, though I suspect another factor is the same one you see with eg. developers using frameworks - the (incorrect) assumption that "work done by someone/something else" is automatically equivalent to "work saved by yourself", when in reality it can generate *more* work than you would have otherwise needed to do, especially if the tool is a bad fit.

"AI"

@joepie91 yeah good point! Often adding new stuff to an existing system is harder than making something simple more from scratch. There's definitely lots of pitfalls around our perception of effort vs reality

"AI"

@teo @joepie91 what did they measure? A cashier is a lot faster than me scanning items, no doubt. But that doesn't matter if I stand in line for 5 minutes to get to the cashier but I can get immediately to the self checkout.
