Thinking about something... are there any situations *at all* where "someone responding 1) with a counterargument to 2) someone else's discussion 3) from a day ago" can lead to some kind of useful, productive outcome?

Because personally I've only ever seen this happen in the context of combative arguing, and it has always led to escalation, never to useful conclusions.

@joepie91 I sometimes wait a day to respond with a counterargument, and in e.g. this case that wasn't combative. I can be combative and pissed off, not really willing to exchange, though.

@Heidentweet That seems to be a discussion that you were already involved in, though?

The pattern I'm thinking of is really more "person A and B are having a discussion in a chatroom and finish it, and a day later person C comes in, reads back, and stokes the fire by throwing out counterarguments."

@joepie91 I notice now that I came in on the same day. But if I had seen it the next day, I think I would have gotten involved anyway. But the pattern you describe also exists. I think I took your OP too literally.
