lmfaooo turns out the "software terminated" phone number from the ps1 modchip detection still works and while they do take a bit to find the info they actually still tell you to remove the modchip when calling them

@49016 @vikxin The presence of the chip is the trigger, but what _software_? Is that screen from a game?

@nex @vikxin yes, most games released later by sony have that check in them that checks if a value that should only be present at boot is present during the game startup. if yes, its obviously a modchip, and it either displays the warning or does fun stuff like bricking the main menu so it appears to be somewhat working but not usable

@49016 @nex @vikxin This reminds me of one of the Sly Fox(?) games which, if it detects a pirated copy, quietly changes your jump height or so, so that you get stuck at some now-unpassable point in the middle of the game

@joepie91 @49016 @nex @vikxin There was this RPG that had a whole main story quest around being turned into a spider by a witch and having to solve her quest before she turns you back.

But if your version was cracked, the witch says that pirates deserve to stay that way (and if I remember correctly, she says it in a way that doesn't necessarily break the 4th wall, as if she considered you an in game pirate)

It was some time ago, but I think that "cracked version" that did this was even seeded by the game studio itself, so it kinda served as a game demo. It also led to some fun exchanges with the studio support, because some people didn't get the joke and told on themselves by complayning about a bugged quest.
