not to be a communist about it but if you're finding hypodermic needles in your public trash cans, your gut reaction shouldn't be to get rid of the trash can, it should be "thank god this ended up in a place where I, a DPS worker trained in hazardous waste management can handle it, instead of a kid on the street"

because if you remove the trash cans where the needles end up GUESS WHERE YOU'RE GONNA FIND THEM

@wgahnagl and we couldnt just put biohazard boxes next to the public trash. Like it would be sensible to do

@budsofstone literally that's what I'm emailing about like
The cops are like "uhm, there were needles in the trash so we needed to get rid of them :(" like THEN PUT A FUCKING SHARPS CONTAINER ON THE NEW TRASH CAN YOU FUCKING PIG, DO SOMETHING

@wgahnagl @budsofstone also make sure people can just walk into any pharmacy and get a free sharps container or hand in a full one, no questions asked, hell, make it so you can just grab an individual one or drop one off with the barest of nod from the staff to not like add more of a barrier

@helle @wgahnagl yeah i dont return my sharps they just all in a pile of containers cause the only places to turn them in is police stations. And im prescribed my injectables

@budsofstone @wgahnagl here you have to hand them in at the (out of town) rubbish station, or arrange for pickup, pharmacies in this town do not take them back, it is frustrating.....

@helle @budsofstone @wgahnagl Wait, aren't you in NL? I thought all pharmacies here handle and provide sharps containers? Did I misremember?

@joepie91 @budsofstone @wgahnagl nope, they do not, they will provide them (sell them.... paid for mine, but cheap), they will not all handle the disposal of them, this depends on arrangements with the municipality

@helle @budsofstone @wgahnagl Ugh :| That seems like something to maybe poke the municipality about? Getting things done on a local government level is often easier than on a national level, if you can find the right person to talk to

@joepie91 @budsofstone @wgahnagl the local government here tells you to dispose of them at the waste depot and to call the company handling domestic waste if you cannot get there to arrange for pickup

so legally the local government has covered their asses....

@helle @budsofstone @wgahnagl Oh yeah, I more mean in terms of finding an alderman who would be sympathetic to the cause here (safe needle disposal) and who has some kind of jurisdiction over these decisions, and writing them to ask them to investigate this

@helle @budsofstone @wgahnagl (If you want, I can see if I can find a relevant alderman for you if you send me the name of the municipality)
