@ben As someone who's Dutch, I wouldn't quite call the social safety net "excellent" - it's extremely heavily focused on forcing people back to work (mandatory job applications even for completely unqualified jobs, constant threats of benefits revocation, disability payments you can't actually live off, etc.) and it's much, much worse than it was even just a few decades ago.

Now this is a pretty common theme in most of Europe, so you're probably not likely to find anything better in another EU country today, but it's still important to understand that the old reputation of the Dutch social safety net does not really apply to what we have today.
