Saw a video about 'preparing for war and crisis' from the Dutch national broadcaster, going into detail about what to stock up on and whatnot. And not a single mention of "get to know your neighbours because you won't make it alone".

What kind of shit-tier disaster preparation advice is this.

@joepie91 ours is also like "have water and non perishable food for 3 days. Maybe some iodine tablets. Good luck"

@joepie91
I hope not to become dependent on the 85 year old neighbours…

@sjaakkeuvelaar I mean, the reality of a disaster scenario is that you are going to be mutually dependent on/with the people within walking distance from wherever you are at the moment the disaster occurs, because you cannot assume that there will be any communication or transportation infrastructure left. Whoever those people within walking distance are.

@Sven Slootweg @Sjaak K. 🇳🇱🇪🇺 Haven't seen the video, but I can imagine they want to do it step by step.

First a bit about storing some important stuff in your home, then planning ahead for certain scenarios, which should certainly include pointing at the need to work together with your neighbours.

Doing a long video about all the risks and all you can/should do to prepare may be too much. Some people may panic, others will think it's exaggerated and can be ignored. Shifting from almost a century of peace to "war's coming" is a shock, better do it phased.

But it's got me thinking about picking up pistol and rifle shooting again 😇

@hans The thing is, that's the wrong order. Time is an important factor in disaster preparation, and getting to know your neighbours is a relatively slow process compared to buying some rice and water at the shop, so it really should've been the first thing.

@hans (Given the recent history of Dutch politics I also kind of doubt that "helping people get to know their neighbours" is even on the schedule at all, this place is extremely individualist)

@sjaakkeuvelaar What, you haven't heard of old people hearing rumours and being able to retell them?

Being able to access the right rumour in the right time can be a life-saver in certain kinds of crises!

I’m a lucky person: they’re pretty much deaf.

(They are lucky persons too: they’re pretty much deaf. Our children are not deaf: they’re deafening)

@sjaakkeuvelaar Deaf people get to see and relay gossip that hearing people might miss!

Not my thing. But I found a great recipe for preparing aged people and get the meat soft and tender. I’m glad they live next door.

@joepie91 I would like to know where my nearest bomb shelter is, and who is responsible for dealing with holes in dikes. As long as the govt has no such lists for me, I don't take this shit seriously.

This stuff is meant to prepare folks for higher military spending. And it's working. 😑
