I want to better understand how people decide to donate to things. Therefore, a little poll! 
Do you donate to people/projects through Patreon, or through other services? Why or why not? (Please elaborate in the replies if you can.)
@joepie91 I've tried to avoid Patreon specifically because of the fees, but also because I hate the idea of people being reliant on a single platform that changes their TOS frequently enough to impact their users.
@joepie91 I don't frequently see patreon as an option in projects
and I don't have a patreon (receiving or donating) because I haven't felt the want to donate to someone only on patreon
@joepie91 I donate to a fair few things on Patreon, it’s nice and easy for ongoing bits and I’ve already given them my card details - also easy to turn off if needed as I have one place to check.
Other sites, usually I’m doing a one-off donation, though mostly I’ve not really run into anything I’d like to donate to on an ongoing basis that isn’t already on Patreon, save for one or two OpenCollective
@joepie91 patreon makes me dizzy before i log in, kofi makes me dizzy after i pay someone. I don't have a creditcard and I'm told I can pay with stripe but i haven't figured out how. So can only use things that accept paypal. I resent the amount of VAT and fees between me and the person who gets my money, especially when it's because i pay someone for mutual aide reasons.
@joepie91 no to patreon, yes to other sites - but mostly that's arbitrary. i don't have a lot of money and one of the few ppl i throw a lil money at is on ko-fi instead, so that's how it happened. 🤷
@joepie91 I feel like there'd be interesting results if, instead of asking "do you", if you'd asked "do you prefer".
@rallias There would be, but in this case "do you" really is the right phrasing for what I'm trying to work out 🙂
@joepie91 I don't donate through sites any more because I don't have a credit card and Paypal hates me (they want my government ID but that's not in the name I use and signed up with). I do donate occasionally if it's possible to use iDeal.
@joepie91 idk if I should be ashamed of that but most (by quantity) of my recurring "donations" are for early/exclusive access to stuff, and Patreon is usually the only option for most artists.
In cases of actually just giving money for a good person/cause I'll just use whatever seems to be the preference for the recipient (if it's not a total pain).
@joepie91 I use patreon out of pragmatism (yay network effect), and also it provides a better experience than the other sites for some stuff, especially early access to paid downloads (which is distinctly missing from ko-fi and comradery).
@joepie91 yes to Patreon, no to others, but that's because I currently only have a single recurring donation and not because I don't like other sites
