Great, missed another hospital call because Android *again* spontaneously failed to make any noise when I got a call, even though the phone was literally right next to me the entire time
So I just caught my Android in the process of breaking; it went off, made no noise, "getting called" animation was showing on the screen, but swiping up did nothing, it just bounced back down and didn't pick up the call. Didn't matter how often I tried.
So yeah, it's definitely just the phone app that's fucked.
I am clearly not the only one with this problem: https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/144103327/unable-to-answer-calls-when-phone-rings?hl=en
@joepie91 Me and my coworkers have had this happen to us multiple times. Both calls and texts Android just fumbles the bag and says nothing until we either check or 10 minutes after we urgently needed the person we called they finally get a notif. These smartphones are so fucking useless.
@joepie91 The primary functionality of Google's phone OS is for you to watch and click advertisements...
@joepie91 this is the only reason I switched to iPhone because of this specific problem of calls and texts failing for no explainable reason. I want to blame the cell service or network connection, but I’ve missed zero calls or text on iPhone compared to multiple per week on Android for 2-3 years. I had to start relying on VOIP for work until I switched. It’s a shame how much the rest of iOS really stinks because of how consistent it is.
I finally made the switch back to a dumbphone because of how much I rely on calls and texts so now I can safely switch back to Android for everything else when the time comes.
@joepie91 I have been thinking about getting a dumbphone for a while, one that is just a data-modem and a phone...
@joepie91 Sheer talent.
@joepie91 Apparently this is very difficult to get right because iOS suffers from the same problem.
Also wake up alarms.
Strangely enough, my old Nokia N97 which I used until 2014 didn’t have any of these issues.
@joepie91 did you try to boot in failsafe mode? happened to me as well (pixel 6a). It's really annoying.
I like the experience overall but I hope to find another manufacturer for the next phone, some things are really stupid e.g. I can't know what is connected to the hotspot or put a limit on the number of devices
@zarel I haven't, but there's exactly the problem described in that thread: it's a non-deterministic failure and I can't just keep it running in safe mode forever.
(My phone is not a Pixel, it's an Oukitel, and it seems to be manufacturer-independent)
@joepie91 You have a Pixel but haven't installed GrapheneOS?
@freakazoid My phone is not a Pixel, no.
@joepie91
Does your phone have a built-in spam & scam filter? My Samsung does, so 9/10 calls I get simply don't ring, I just get a beep about a new voicemail and if I go looking there's a log entry for a declined scam call.
@joepie91
It's not a good feature and should not be on by default.
@silvermoon82 Not that I know of.
@joepie91
Oh, that's super annoying!
How the fuck do you develop a phone OS and make the *primary functionality* of a phone not work reliably
