If you could choose one piece of software you wanted to exist, something that just does one simple thing and which right now you can't find (because eg. everything is bogged down in subscription or enshittification nonsense), what would it be? :boost_requested:

@joepie91 @mynameistillian A minor hobby of mine is designing abstract board games (think chess, go, reversi, Stratego). I'd kill for a program that allows prototyping grid-based games. Yes, there's PlayingCards and other sites but they're clunky and do not support custom piece images and board sizes or shapes.

Ideally I want something like the Lichess or chess.com analysis board where you can shape the board and then put custom pngs or svgs as pieces then snap them to any square.

@maxthefox @mynameistillian To clarify, would this mean strictly a static design thing (so essentially an image/tilemap editor but geared towards board game layouts) or would there also be some kind of interactivity/playability to it for playtesting?

@joepie91 @mynameistillian You'd be able to move pieces around like in lichess.org/editor but rules wouldn't be enforced obviously. Maybe there'd be LAN support for playtesting but it'd have to be a honor system.
