what's like the thing that allows you to choose a hostname on your computer and have that hostname be translatable to like IP addresses on a private network

like I can type ssh lockedmac-gentoo or ping or even type into my browser address bar and it just does the right thing. and the IP could change too and it would still be correct. what's that.

(not specific to SSH (that can be done with configs with static IPs) but like general and probably DNS as well. I don't care too much if it requires appending .local to the end)

@jacksonchen666 I believe that's typically handled by the router's embedded DNS server, with the hostnames being informed by what your system reports over DHCP; and potentially a domain suffix (like aforementioned .local)
