Arrival in Volmerange-les-Mines 🇫🇷. The basic station is situated in an industrial area outside of town. With its P+R car park, it serves as a bridgehead from France to Luxembourg. There is also a bus stop with a few departures a day. Of course, it is not called "gare" but "douane". There's a train every 30mins. From a tariff perspective, the station still counts as Luxembourg.

I wonder, with what they'll replace the small Z2 units on all these short branch lines in the South. All other trainsets they have, are a lot bigger.
#AllIncluxive

Back to Dudelange 🇱🇺, the biggest town on this short branch line. It is served by four stations with short distances in between, true light-rail style.
#AllIncluxive

9 o'clock. Time for a second breakfast, which is why we head into the small town. It's not really beach weather, even if there is one! Then we take another of the very frequent and free busses with the fantastic destination Avenue du Rock'n'Roll!
#AllIncluxive

The bus rolls but doesn't really rock, so we disembark in Esch-sur-Alzette for something that rocks more: Another Z2, another branch line!
#AllIncluxive

With #FensterAuf through industrial wasteland, under the disused railway viaduct and across the border to Audun-le-Tiche 🇫🇷. Another branch line which terminates just across the border.
#AllIncluxive #CrossBorderRail

Same as in Volmerange: A P+R car park; the station probably mainly exists to reduce car traffic into Luxembourg. Which doesn't seem to work so bad, the car park is full. The line used to continue in a 360° curve over the old viaduct into France. Today, it's a CFL only station with CFL tariff.
#AllIncluxive

Back to Esch-sur-Alzette. All three southern branches done, 4 border crossings so far. ✅
Next: To the West with another Bombardier Traxx double decker train.
#AlIncluxive

The stopping service to Petange is insanely slow, but eventually we arrived. Line 60 done. ✅
Three CFL train generations to be seen here. I'm not a fan of the livery on the newest addition to the fleet, the Alstom Coradia Stream HC. Too much visual noise, to many hard colour contrasts.
#AllIncluxive

We're getting a bit nervous as the last border crossing was already nearly an hour ago. But the next train fortunately takes us to Athus 🇧🇪.
#AllIncluxive

No onwards connection with SNCB for this train, so we head back to Rodange 🇱🇺. The line crosses the intermodal terminal, which strangely is situated in a sharp curve.
#AllIncluxive

Nearly an hour to kill at Rodange, as the cross border services only run in the morning peak, at noon and in the evening peak. The Rodange station has been recently modernised, a lot of grey dominates the place. But still far away from level boarding for most of the double decker carriages. An SNCB hauled freight passes.
#AllIncluxive

The type of our next train already shows: It's going to France again next. A short hop across the border to Longwy 🇫🇷. This is a true cross border line with an SNCF connection onwards in form of an AGC trainset.
#AllIcluxive

Being a "true" railway border means we need a ticket. The 🇱🇺 CFL ticket machine only sells tickets towards France, but not back. 6 EUR for two persons. The 🇫🇷 SNCF TER machine in Longwy can sell both directions. And the ticket is much cheaper: 3.20 EUR for two persons.
#AllIncluxive #CrossBorderRail

Short stroll into town to look for some food. It's obvious that this part of France has seen better times long ago.
#AllIncluxive

Back to "SNCF Voyageurs", erm, I mean: the station. In the meantime, another CFL train and another AGC arrived. As in many towns, Longwy got a new station square.
#AllIncluxive

Aaaand back to Luxembour again. We're at 8 border crossings today now. And for once, it's now a bit a longer ride back to Luxembourg to tick off line 70. ✅
#AllIncluxive

Luxembourg station. Getting another cross border ticket (this time, the machine is able to sell aller-retour) and grabbing something to eat and onto the next train. It's by far the most comfortable one today: SNCB I11 coaches hauled by a class 1300. 🥰 The 20 mins to Arlon are barely enough to eat lunch.
#AllIncluxive

Arrival in Arlon 🇧🇪 with it's impressive station building. I export my Luxemburg trash, the packaging of my salad, to a Belgian bin.
#AllIncluxive

SNCB responds instantly and sends Belgian scrap to Luxembourg in the form of a Desiro on the Regionalbunn. 😡
#AllIncluxive

«Binge Belgium» sounds exactly what Lars and I normally do, when we're in this area. But not today, today is more like «Binge Luxembourg», which is why we return to the capital, get another cross border (again only aller-simple!) ticket and look for the last CFL train type we haven't been on: The Stadler Kiss towards Germany.
Line 50 done, next up Line 30.
#AllIncluxive

Along river Mosel towards Germany. The train is rather crowded and the overeager train manager starts the ticket control just after Luxembourg - even if there's no ticket needed until the German border. For all German speakers: Ich spare euch die oberbilligen Witze.
#AllIncluxive

The platform at the next stop clearly shows that this must be Belgium, Germany or France. But the two systematic hourly services smells like Germany and indeed, it is. Border crossing No 11 done, welcome to Igel! 🇩🇪🦔
#AllIncluxive

As RE and RB run in a 9-51 minute takt, we have a bit of time to explore the village of Igel 🦔. The main sight is a roman monument, the «Igler Säule» and a nice garden above it.
#AllIncluxive

Back across the border to Wasserbillig 🇱🇺. The rivers Mosel and Sauer are common territory of Germany and Luxembourg!
#AllIncluxive

In Wasserbillig, change to the road, as the old Sauerlinn was shut down decades ago. The CFL bus takes the direct route to Echternach and ends at a huge bus station with nearly no infrastructure, generously named «Gare» - even if it has nothing to do with the location of the old railway station.
It is really very convenient not having to care about where to get a bus ticket.
#AllIncluxive

Another Bus (which I forgot to take a picture of) along the river to Diekirch. A short stroll to the busy old town to the station.
#AllIncluxive

Arrival in Luxembourg the spectacular way. 4 countries, 12 border crossings, 4 out of 5 lines done. ✅ Enough for today.
#AllIncluxive

Luxembourg station this morning at a much more convenient time. We ticked off most of the lines yesterday, so it's only the north left for today. Only downside: This means 1.5 hours of SNCB Desiro... 🙄
#AllIncluxive

Sorry, the thread had to be paused due to the lack of power sockets in nearly all CFL train. Will resume now to cover Saturday and today.
#AllIncluxive

According to some of Luxembourg's public transport apps, this train doesn’t run, doesn’t serve all stops or does run normally - depending on which you use. Also the data shared internationally is wrong. #CrossBorderRail data fail. As you can see, the train runs. And the ligne du Nord following the rivers in the valley, is one of Luxembourg's most scenic lines.
#AllIncluxive

After Troisvierges, we finished the climb, cross the highlands and shortly after arrive in the windswept border station of Gouvy 🇧🇪. It’s considerably colder than down in Luxembourg. 🥶
#AllIncluxive

On the street side of the station, it becomes very clear that this is indeed Belgium. There’s a supermarket, a bar and a laundry machine. A few times a day, a TEC bus connects the German speaking part of Belgium to this station.
#AllIncluxive

There’s an SNCB ticket machine. It sells you a ticket to the Luxembourg border, once you managed to find your way through the absolutely horrible interface, making you entering things twice and requiring a rather good geographical knowledge of Belgian-Luxembourgian railway borders. The price is exactly the same as at the CFL ticket machines in Luxembourg.

@dominicstucki @jon Every time I see a picture of (or interact with) a ticket machine elsewhere, I am reminded of how good we still have it here with the NS ticket machines...

(They're not quite as good in some ways as the old ones with physical buttons, though. But that's definitely never coming back.)
