So I haven’t touched Windows in a long time but I have a new box that has it with an OEM license in the firmware. I want to make it a (linux) hypervisor but I’d like to also have a Windows vm on there. Can I somehow use the hardware license for that? I don’t care if it’s “technically against the EULA” as long as it works.

@marlies Back when I still did desktops, this was explicitly allowed for Windows 7 at least, using the OEM license for a VM on that hardware

@arjjra awesome, thanks! but how do I get the VM to know that? On bare metal windows just magically knows there’s a license by looking at some magic memory address or something. How do I transfer that?

@marlies @arjjra IIRC there's a license key embedded into the EFI data and/or registry that you can export and then import into another installation with specialized tools, but the details escape me
