tech industry hell

fun (horrifying) thing I fully realised when writing up stuff this morning: the way that server providers operate means that there are thousands of servers sitting around underutilised, or in some cases, completely unused

in order to have the room to scale up on demand from whoever wants power whenever, they need a massive surplus of devices just hanging out doing nothing

re: tech industry hell

@clarfonthey While broadly true, there is a mitigating factor: "instant server" providers generally offer significantly lower-priced capacity when there is surplus capacity (with the risk of your server being shut off as soon as a regular customer needs it), which does at least theoretically help to smooth out the demand.
