23andme hack, PSA, serious safety threat

So apparently 23andme, the genetic testing company, has been hacked - and many of their customers' genetic profiles are now being publicly sold.

Concerningly, the sellers offer to sell the data grouped by *ethnic group*, and they have apparently included the data of a set of Ashkenazi Jews as a 'sample'.

If these claims are true, this is extremely concerning - they are basically marketing directly to nazis, and are effectively selling genetic hitlists.

Crucially, this does *not* just affect people who have taken a 23andme test, but also anyone *related to* someone who has.

I'm... honestly not sure what to do with this, besides warning people about this and the potential impact :/

@joepie91 it's such extremely unfortunate and predictable result. I really hope legislators will at least take notes and do some catching up to prevent this mess in the future :BlobGrimace:

There's no mitigation other than practicing good opsec in other areas. If people don't know who/where you are they can't connect the leaked info to you, but once it's leaked it's leaked :BlobAwkward:

re: 23andme hack, PSA, serious safety threat

@rune Unfortunately, 23andme likely also has the address details of everybody (for shipping the kit?), so that horse would seem to have bolted

@joepie91 true, any 1st party users are likely compromised both ways.

But linking the data to non-users requires both knowing family relationships and addresses, which is less likely to be widely available.. At least until someone finds another massive data leak and mixes them (looking at you facebook)
