Question: does anyone have a good explanation I can reference that explains why/how pepe imagery is fascist? :boost_requested:

(I know why it is myself, so no ad-hoc explanations please; I'm looking for an article or something that I can link someone else to, without needing to write it myself, I am low on spoons)

@joepie91 is this like what you're looking for? https://www.adl(dot)org/resources/hate-symbol/pepe-frog

(Edit, I'm breaking the link because the example they used shows up in the site preview)

@joepie91 @welshpixie I think there’s an entire movie about it actually. Looking for link…

Pepe the frog discussion

@joepie91@social.pixie.town this is kinda tangential, but this was a really neat doc on Pepe and how it got to the point it did. Neat if you have a bit of time to sink into it and find it interesting. https://www.pbs.org/independentlens/documentaries/feels-good-man/

I don't have a great written form of what you're looking for. Hopefully you got some good answers already!

@joepie91 All of these replies are good additions, but I also want to highlight how the creator of Pepe does NOT like fascists using Pepe as a hate symbol and has legally gone after them for it many times. So, it’s important to point out how Matt Furie is not a fascist and it’s not his fault Pepe became associated with fascism.

There’s more articles like this, and I respect Matt Furie trying his damndest to keep Pepe out of the hands of fascists.

@joepie91 i see a lot of people have already linked articles, so here's something a lil different (but might not be quite what you're looking for):

(tldr: it's a personal anecdote about why i stopped using pepe imagery, especially in the context of fedi)
