politics, question

Does anyone know what the actual origin is of the "you'll grow more conservative as you get older" trope? It smells an awful lot like it started life as a propaganda campaign.

@joepie91
"you'll grow more conservative as you get older", more like "i'm white and i got more capital and i grow more conservative to protect and uphold white supremacy which lets me have this privilege because of oppression"

re: politics, question

@joepie91 There is that one quote, often attributed to Winston Churchill, about how people who aren't liberal while young have no heart, and people who aren't conservatives when they're older have no head... but its origins actually date back to the 19th century: https://quoteinvestigator.com/2014/02/24/heart-head/

I think as a meme, this idea has probably been around for a while.

politics, question

@joepie91 Some conservative person wrote it. It comes from the fact that we all generalize from our own experience. Well, at least I do.

politics, question

@joepie91 I wonder if there are any socioeconomic factors that lead to there being a greater proportion of conservatives among older cohorts...

politics, question

@joepie91 my impression is that it originates from the kind of wealthy families that need to dissuade their idealistic children from giving away wealth in ways that actually matter.
