And so the arguing over "is this corporation behaving badly enough to ban or should we let them continue posting noise?" begins...

This is *precisely* why you ban corporations on sight, because this is how it goes every time, and the outcome is also the same every time: a dishonest wasteland of corporations trying to emulate human connection

@joepie91 🤔 I feel like there's a line between some indie person actually being authentic and selling what they make and BigCo™. Like i WANT to hear about people's cool Etsy wares, and indie developer's cool software. At the same time I agree about BigCo™ and fake human connection.

I don't think the answer is black and white.

@masukomi @joepie91 Indie person probably doesn't qualify as a corporation, so why even bring it up here?

@shine @joepie91 because if you’re going to have a rule about no corps you need to be able to define what constitutes one. We can agree that Meta is an an indie artist is not. But how do we define the line between the two? It’s obviously not the act of selling things if an indie artist is not.

@masukomi @joepie91 For me it's fairly simple. The moment it's not a single person (like for example Abandoned America) but legal commercial entity. Because then it's not a person with their own personality, various motives and some private business anymore, but an artificial person that has primarily financial motives. The hard line is with publically traded companies, because there, profit motivation is legally mandated.

But seriously, if someone talks about corporation, jumping in and asking "what about indie artists" sounds quite like concern trolling.

@shine @joepie91 sounds like concern trolling. yeah, I get that, but it wasn't my intent. I've been the indie who has ALSO been incorporated.

"Corporation" is arguably a bad definition because of how many indies are also corps. I think we agree about the feel of the thing that's bad, but can we really do no better at defining "bad" than "you'll know it when you see it"?

How can we protect our communities if we can't define what we don't want in them?

re: meta subtoot, corporations on fedi

@masukomi @shine "Defining what we don't want in them" does not necessitate "specifying an exact watertight definition of what is and isn't acceptable". In fact, "you know it when you see it" is a *crucial* part of effective moderation, because it is the only way to defend from rulelawyering.

All of this is kind of a moot point anyway, considering that there are already widespread "no corporations" policies in place in many places anyway, including definitions of "corporation" such as "as soon as you hire more than zero people". This is not some complicated hypothetical conundrum.

re: meta subtoot, corporations on fedi

@joepie91 @shine I agree that there's value in "you'll know it when you see it", because like i said, it's a "fuzzy" line. Stating that it's a "fuzzy" line also means that I'm acknowledging you can't specify an "exact watertight definition". What I'm saying is that we can, and should, do better than "big huge co" vs "individual". I never implied anything "complicated" or "hypothetical" 1/2

re: meta subtoot, corporations on fedi

@joepie91 @shine BUT "no corporations" is a 💩 policy & definition because there are indie creators we agree are "good" and "acceptable" but are also corporations. We can and should do better when discussing this, and when moderating this. "corporation" is a 🐄💩 placeholder that doesn't actually convey what we don't want. We don't care about legal entity BS. We care about behavior/ethics. We should talk about that not a misleading placeholder. 2/2

@masukomi @shine Okay, I'm going to be a bit more blunt about this: I didn't ask for this arguing in my mentions, and I don't appreciate it either.

The discussion about "what is a corporation" is regularly had in many communities on here in their own threads with people who are actually interested in (re-)having that discussion, which is not me. I am not interested in re-litigating it.

My comment, which is about treating corporations as bad actors by default, has nothing to do with that. Your commentary is off-topic to my comment, and like was already mentioned, feels an awful lot like concern trolling.

And my original comment stands: corporations should be banned from community spaces on sight.

understood. my apologies. had i realized you felt i was arguing rather than trying to come to a common understand with others who expressed interest in a topic i would have stopped. Had you mentioned you were displeased earlier, i would have also stopped earlier.
