i'm curious if y'all have any thoughts on the ethics of using Whisper, a speech recognition model that is made by OpenAI, for enabling subtitles in real-time video calls on self-hosted video calling software like Jitsi and Nextcloud Talk

this is not about technical limitations -- pretend i have unlimited compute resources

is the concession of using this OpenAI tool worth the benefits of being able to actually provide an accessible alternative to Zoom, google meet, et. al.? i'd love to hear from people who've already done this math for themselves, one way or the other

please know that i'm approaching this question as an absolutely unapologetic AI hater

@stillgreenmoss I'd say it's fine, I think it is probably better than the alternative of just sending the voice data off to a third party.
