I just read a thread about "starter packs" and bloody hell I really wish people would divest of the idea that A) everyone needs stuff spoon fed to them or they won't "get it", and B) "the fedi" "needs" stuff like this or it won't "grow".
Trying to replicate massive vc-funded attention pits on a shoestring budget is a fool's errand, we oughta be accepting that as a first principle when building federated software. We oughta be discovering + leaning into the shit that the structural affordances of federated networks make possible, not trying to wallpaper over the cracks with paper-thin reproductions of what everyone else is doing. What's the fucking point of making a knock-off decentralized Twitter or a knock-off federated Instagram when the real thing is right over there and it's undoubtedly easier to use, all your mates are there, and it doesn't break all the time?
Folks really work from faulty-ass assumptions about socializing and healthy networks and map that onto everything and then complain when it doesn't fit, and it boils my piss all the way to evaporation.
