ok, so we have to go down to python 3.11.6 because 3.11.7 somehow broke tests for pytest-mock (how does that happen in a minor version? idk, apparently the answer is in https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest-mock/pull/404)

but now that means I'm compiling everything from scratch... yay
