This is a really good analysis of where Twitter sits in the social media ecosystem. Unfortunately the conclusion does not bode well for competitors like the fediverse.
That said, I have found the fediverse to be less of a Twitter replacement and more… something else. Less of a river of information and the thrill of ideological conflict, and more a chill place to talk about technology and software.
