masto meta, trending posts
I know a lot of people find trending posts a Bad Feature, and while I personally don't find them very useful because I come across 90% of those posts on my Home timeline anyway, I find them a good feature for those who are new to Mastodon and have difficulty finding interesting posts on the public timelines.
It also sets examples of posts others interact with, which is useful for newbies who can't understand why no one interacts with their posts and assume it's because "it's too empty".
However, I've recently found out posts with content warnings or media marked as sensitive don't get to trend. I'm assuming this is trying to encourage folks to use less content warnings, but even if this isn't the intent, I'm sure those on bigger instances have already figured it out or will notice more interactions come with less content warnings.
Which is worrying.
Here's how to change the code, for those who run instances: https://github.com/IsabelaY/mastodon/commit/39bb10874033d29d0bb53691fed03b891d3a91f4
re: masto meta, trending posts
@stardust huh did that change in Mastodon 4.x? There used to be admin settings for allowing those
re: masto meta, trending posts
@stardust oh I see, in 3.x it's still a normal Mastodon setting under Site settings, and 4.x onwards it's a glitch-soc addition under Server settings > Discovery. Possibly Hometown has it too, haven't checked
re: masto meta, trending posts
@f0x colorid.es is 4+hometown, and there are only settings to allow/disallow trends, nothing about content warnings or allowing such posts is mentioned.
