Meta; big instances

I remember a while back I made a post about how happy I was to have my long-standing policy on Scholar of limiting servers that have > 10k users and open registrations

And someone from a big instance came in to tell on themselves ("we have > 10k users and open reg's, but we're the good guys, so this is good news, actually")

And so I limited the instance after that post

And I keep being vindicated in that decision

Meta; big instances

Friends

* If you got > 10k people and your door's wide open, there's no way you're on top of all the bad people wandering in that you're platforming
* No instance should be "too big to block"
* External accountability (other instances can block you if you fuck up bad enough) is a good thing

And yes, the 10k line is arbitrary, but you gotta draw it somewhere

@researchfairy there's some wild cognitive dissonance at play here too, like *surely* anarchists would know better than flocking on a single, centralized, instance :|
