So we just did some math in a discord server

According to some stats we found online, the payout on spotify is 0.00437 cents per stream

I looked up the length of my most listened to song today (4:21 minutes)

It would take me between 34 and 35 days of listening to that one song straight to make the artist 50 cents. And that's only if I'm listening to that one song on a loop 24/7

The most expensive spotify subscription is 10€ per person. The cheapest one (afaik) is a family subscription that is actually shared by six people, costing 15€ per month.

So Spotify Premium subscribers pay between 2.50€ and 10€ a month. And far less than 50 cents of that are paid to the artists (And my guess is the label eats up much of those 50 cents)

By the way, the consensus in the server can be summarized like this:

1. We all use a combination of streaming and piracy (hypothetically). Some people also buy music, most commonly as CDs (2 people. We're not talking about a big sample size here.)

2. After reading those numbers, multiple people looked up their favorite music on #Bandcamp. One person asked for a tool to search #Deezer playlists for tracks available on Bandcamp (anybody?)

3. Seemingly everybody agreed with the statements "I would buy more #music if it was available" and "I would buy or pirate my music instead if it wasn't so inconvenient"

(Then we all went on nostalgia rants about CDs and cassettes. But that's a different conversation)
